The brand, already known for low prices, has good deals available on products ranging from the usual suspects like TVs and laptops to summer goodies like grills. What to shop for in the Walmart 4th of July sale

It should come as no surprise that Walmart has great TV deals. If you want to get one of the cheapest TVs you can find right now, we recommend the for just $118, down from $168. Sure, its smaller and just 720p, but its still perfect for your kid’s summer sleepovers with young friends that you can’t really trust to not put dirty fingers on the screen. Plus, it’s still cheaper than most of the best tablets for kids. Want a premium TV instead? This might be more up your alley. Get the OLED TV that our Samsung S95C review called “jaw-droppingly gorgeous” for $1,431 off. That brings its price down to $1,868 from $3,299.

In the laptops department, the best deals seem to be coming from HP. For the more casual consumer, this with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD that’s been marked down to $279 from $519 (a savings of $240) will likely be enticing. For more power, this with an Intel Core i3 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD might be the better speed.

Then, of course, we get to summer goodies to get us ready for the 4th and the sweltering days beyond. We have a thing for Ninja Foodi deals, and this is going to be hard for anyone with a sweet tooth to pass up. Frore Unveils Waterproof AirJet Mini Sport for Smartphones

Over the past couple of years, Frore Systems has demonstrated several ways that its AirJet solid-state active cooling systems can be used to improve cooling in fanless devices like laptops, tablets, SSDs, and edge computing devices. But there are a subset of those applications that need their cooling options to also be waterproof, and Frore is looking to address those as well. To that end, this week Frore introduced its AirJet Mini Sport, a waterproof, IP68-rated solid-state cooling device that is aimed at use in smartphones and action cameras.

Introduced at MWC Shanghai to attract attention of China-based handset vendors, edge and industrial computing devices, and action cameras, the AirJet Mini Sport is an enhanced version of Frore’s AirJet Mini Slim. This version has been fully waterproofed, offering IP68-level protection that allows it to work while being submerged in over 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. Internally, the AirJet Mini Sport can effectively dissipate 5.25 Watts of heat by generating 1750 Pascals of back pressure, while consuming 1 Watt of energy itself.

Elsewhere, Frore claims that the AirJet Mini Sport can be used to provide 2.5 Watts of cooling capacity to smartphones. Which, although not enough to cover the complete power consumption/heat dissipation of a high-end SoC, would have a significant impact on both burst and steady-state performance by allowing those chips to run at peak clocks and power for longer periods of time.

To ensure consistent performance of Frore’s AirJet Mini Sport in diverse environments, the cooling device includes features such as dust resistance and self-cleaning. In addition, just like AirJet Mini Slim, the Sport-badged version its own thermal sensor to control its own operation and maintain optimal performance. As a result, Frore claims that smartphones and action cameras with the AirJet Mini Sport can achieve up to 80% better performance.

“We are excited to announce the waterproof AirJet Mini Sport,” said Dr. Seshu Madhavapeddy, founder and CEO of Frore Systems. “Consumers demand increased performance in compact devices they can use anywhere, on land or in water. Apple has finally released two new iPads this calendar year: the iPad Air (2024) and the iPad Pro (2024). However, the regular iPad hasn’t been updated since 2022. It’s not a bad tablet by any means, but with a little bit of research and know-how, you can find other tablets that might be a much better fit.

Here are the best iPad (2022) alternatives you can purchase now. A few might surprise you.

iPad Air (2024)

Let’s begin with the most obvious alternative: the iPad Air (2024). The sixth-generation model is positioned between the iPad Pro series and the regular iPad. You can choose between an 11-inch and, for the first time, a 13-inch iPad Air.

For the sake of this discussion, it’s important to emphasize the distinctions between the 11-inch iPad Air and the 10.9-inch iPad (2022), of which there are several.

The M2 chip, a significant leap from the A14 Bionic chip in the previous model, powers the new iPad Air (2024). The M2 chip boasts an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine — delivering enhanced power efficiency for a smoother tablet experience. That’s the same chip on the still-impressive iPad Pro (2022).

Additionally, unlike the iPad (2022), the iPad Air will support Apple Intelligence, the company’s new AI tools announced earlier this year. AI is a big deal and something to keep an eye on in the coming years.

The iPad Air (2024) features a slightly larger display and incorporates P3 wide color and anti-reflective coating. These enhancements result in a more vibrant and immersive viewing experience.

With the iPad Air (2024), you also gain support for the all-new Apple Pencil Pro, which has more features than the Apple Pencil (USB-C), the drawing tool that works with the current iPad.

Finally, the iPad Air now comes with more storage, which is great for creatives, gamers, and anyone needing ample tablet storage. You have your choice of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or a whopping 1TB.

The 2024 iPad Air costs $250 more than the 2022 iPad, but its improved chip, Apple Intelligence support, and larger and better display justify the higher price. Besides, the iPad Air is two years newer than the iPad, which means it will support more versions of iPadOS in the coming years.

Finally, remember that there’s also a 13-inch iPad Air this time, which offers the same features as the 11-inch model but with a bigger display and battery.

iPad Pro (2024)

The iPad Pro (2024) is the best Apple iPad on the market and the best iPad ever created. It’s available in 11-inch and 13-inch varieties. The iPad Pro not only inherits all the features of the iPad Air (2024) but also boasts a range of remarkable upgrades, setting it apart as the top contender in the tablet market.

The iPad Pro (2024) kicks off its impressive upgrades with the exclusive Apple M4, a chip that currently has no match in the Mac lineup. This powerhouse chip delivers a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and a sophisticated 16-core Neutral Engine — setting a new benchmark in tablet performance.

The iPad Pro (2024) is the first tablet to feature an Ultra Retina XDR display. This display uses cutting-edge tandem OLED technology to provide incredible contrast, ProMotion, and True Tone. It also offers 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness and 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness, making using the iPad Pro (2024) in various light conditions easier.

Like the 2024 iPad Air, the 2024 iPad Pro also supports the Apple Pencil Pro. The iPad Pro (2024) is also the thinnest iPad Apple has created and one of the lightest.

Not surprisingly, the 2024 iPad Pro is significantly more expensive than the 2022 iPad, starting at a hefty $999. You’ll need to decide if the advanced features justify the higher cost. For some people, the iPad Pro may not be worth that much more money. But for others, it’ll be a no-brainer.

iPad (2021)

The iPad Air (2024) and iPad Pro (2024) offer experiences that far exceed the iPad (2022). Now, let’s go in the opposite direction. Instead of buying the current iPad, you might want to consider going with the older model, the iPad (2021).

Apple no longer sells this aging tablet, but it is still available through third-party sellers. Across the board, you’ll get old features on the iPad (2021), such as an A13 Bionic chip, a smaller 10.2-inch display, an inferior rear camera, a Lightning connector versus a USB-C connector, and Touch ID in the Home bottom.

That all said, the iPad (2021) may be better than the iPad (2022) because of its lower price. It is often available for under $250, making it a great budget-friendly option, as it is about $100 less than the iPad (2022).

We don’t recommend the iPad (2021) as a primary tablet, but it’s an excellent choice for iPad newcomers or as a secondary tablet in the household.

Amazon Fire Max 11

Our last two alternatives to the iPad (2022) belong to two other companies. The first is the Amazon Fire Max 11, an affordable Android tablet released in 2023.

The 11-inch tablet from Amazon is worth considering for several reasons, as long as you’re OK with using Fire OS 8 (built on Android) instead of iPadOS. It comes at a lower price than the 2021 and 2022 iPads, yet it offers a 2K display, an octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi 6 for fast streaming. Additionally, it includes a fingerprint sensor for easy and secure unlocking and an 8MP rear camera.

Consider another critical factor: battery life. While each tablet mentioned earlier offers up to 10 hours between charges, this Amazon tablet offers 14 hours. Its price point makes it an excellent choice for kids, retirees, and anyone frequently on the go.

Our review praised the Amazon Fire 11 Max as “an excellent Android tablet you should consider purchasing.” In addition to the points mentioned earlier, the tablet is recognized for its excellent screen for video and terrific accessories such as a keyboard and kickstand case, which only increase its price to around what Apple charges for the iPad (2022) without either accessory.

Lenovo Tab P11 Pro Gen 2

If you’re an Android fan and want a more powerful alternative to the Amazon Fire Max 11 as a substitute for the iPad (2022), the Lenovo Tab P11 Pro Gen 2 is a compelling choice. This 11.2-inch tablet, released around the same time as the iPad (2022), has seen a significant price drop, with some models now available for under $200.

For this, you’ll receive a 2.5K (2560 by 1536) OLED display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor, and up to 14 hours of battery life. The tablet also has a 13MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. It also offers a sleek dual-tone design with its aluminum body.

Like the Amazon Fire Max 11, the Lenovo Tab P11 Pro Gen 2 is a less expensive iPad (2022) with better battery life and a slightly larger display. Though most models ship with Android 12, the Lenovo tablet supports Android 13 and Android 14.

Micron: U.S. Fabs Will Start Operating in 2026 – 2029

When Micron announced plans to build two new fabs in the U.S. in 2022, the company vaguely said both would come online by the decade’s end. Then, in 2023, it began to optimize its spending, which pushed production at these fabrication facilities. This week, the company outlined more precise timeframes for when its fabs in Idaho and New York will start operations: this will happen from calendar 2026 to calendar 2029.

“These fab construction investments are necessary to support supply growth for the latter half of this decade,” a statement by Micron in its Q3 FY2024 financial results report reads. “This Idaho fab will not contribute to meaningful bit supply until fiscal 2027 and the New York construction capex is not expected to contribute to bit supply growth until fiscal 2028 or later. The timing of future [wafer fab equipment] spend in these fabs will be managed to align supply growth with expected demand growth.”

Micron’s fiscal year 2027 starts in September 2026, so the new fab near Boise, Idaho, is set to start operations between September 2026 and September 2027. The company’s fiscal 2028 starts in September 2027, so the fab will likely begin operations in calendar 2028 or later, probably depending on the demand for DRAM memory in the coming years. That said, Micron’s U.S. memory fabs will begin operations between late 2026 and 2029, which aligns with the company’s original plans.

Construction of the fab in Idaho is well underway. In contrast, construction of the New York facility has yet to begin as the company is working on regulatory and permitting processes in the state.

Micron’s capital expenditure (CaPex) plan for FY2024 is approximately $8.0 billion, with a decrease in year-over-year spending on wafer fabrication equipment (WFE). In Q4 FY2024, the company will spend around $3 billion on fab construction, new wafer fab tools, and various expansions/upgrades.

Looking ahead to FY2025, the company plans a substantial increase in capex, targeting a mid-30s percentage of revenue to support various technological and facility advancements. In particular, it expects its quarterly CapEx to average above the $3 billion level seen in the fourth quarter of FY2024, which means that it plans to spend about $12 billion in its fiscal 2025, which begins in late September.

Half or more of the total CapEx increase in FY2025 (i.e., over $2 billion) will be allocated to constructing new fabs in Idaho and New York. Meanwhile, the FY2025 CapEx will significantly rise to fund high-bandwidth memory (HBM) assembly and testing and the construction of fabrication and back-end facilities. This increase also includes investments in technology transitions to meet growing demand.

“Fab construction in Idaho is underway, and we are working diligently to complete the regulatory and permitting processes in New York,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, chief executive officer of Micron, at the company’s conference call with investors and financial analysts (via SeekingAlpha). “This additional leading-edge greenfield capacity, along with continued technology transition investments in our Asia facilities, is required to meet long-term demand in the second half of this decade and beyond. These investments support our objective to maintain our current bit share over time and to grow our memory bit supply in line with long-term industry bit demand.”

I had never played Riven before. Its VR remake blew me away

Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated with both Myst and Riven. I never actually played either, mind you; I was more of a console kid. But even then, I always felt an indescribable draw toward the PC classics. From an outside perspective, they seemed so strange and alluring. At some point, I almost didn’t want to play them. I was happy to leave them as an eternal mystery, puzzles that were better left unsolved.

I finally broke that mindset thanks to developer Cyan Worlds’ new remake of Riven. The ambitious project takes the 1997 puzzle adventure and gives it a modern makeover both on PC and VR. That last part was enough to make me bite the bullet. If I already felt so engrossed by the Myst series from afar, I wanted my first real dive into it to be as all-encompassing as possible. After loading it up on my Meta Quest 3, I’m simultaneously kicking myself for waiting so long to try Riven and glad I did. The VR version is an astonishing adventure that everyone should experience.

The original Riven is the sequel to 1993’s Myst. It’s a first-person point-and-click puzzle game where players traverse a mysterious set of islands in search of the imprisoned Catherine. Actually freeing her is a complicated task. It requires traversing the islands and solving sometimes obtuse puzzles strewn around them. Riven doesn’t explain much; it’s up to players to deduce its internal logic by clicking on everything they can. Those who have the brainpower to make it to the end will find that they’re able to piece together an entire number system through careful observation.

Cyan Worlds’ remake keeps the original game fairly intact, pumping up its visuals and allowing players to freely move. It’s a faithful project — and that’s for the best. Playing Riven in 2024, I’m completely in awe of it. Even from its opening moments, it feels unlike anything I’ve ever played, Several games have tried to build on the ideas of the Myst series (this year’s fantastic Lorelei and the Laser Eyes comes to mind) but nothing quite captures its aura. I feel a visceral sense of isolation, like I’m truly trapped in some otherworldly universe I don’t understand. It’s positively sublime; I’m unnerved and awe-struck in the same breath.

That feeling is only expanded in VR where the remake truly shines. The Meta Quest 3 allowed me to truly lose myself in the world of Riven, blocking out the outside world entirely. I feel the claustrophobia when I’m walking through a narrow pipe or the sense of strange scale when I enter a jungle island and see what looks like an enormous pizza cutter lodged into a wall to my left. I feel like Alice after tumbling down the rabbit hole; everything is wonderfully unfamiliar.

I imagine a lot of players might struggle with Riven‘s actual puzzles. Even as a seasoned fan of the genre, I found myself scratching my head even when trying to deduce what I could interact with. Some of VR’s shortcomings rear their head here. Occasionally clumsy motion controls can make it tricky to spin wheels smoothly. It’s also the kind of game that you really want to take notes during, but that means constantly taking the headset on and off. A screenshot feature helps take out that friction, but it’s always clear that the underlying game was built for PC first.

What’s so incredible about this version of Riven, though, is that you don’t really need to play with the intention of beating it to get the experience. The bulk of my enjoyment came from simply wandering around the odd world and bumping into constant surprises. I jumped in my seat when I got to the bottom of a long staircase only to find two massive creatures that looked like a cross between a pelican and seal. VR emphasizes moments like that even more by giving players an overwhelming sense of scale; they’re enormous!

I didn’t care about freeing Catherine so much. I just wanted to touch every switch, piecing together how its metallic orbs and steam-powered devices worked. Tactile VR controls make that more satisfying than ever, bringing the classic point-and-click genre to its logical conclusion decades later. This is the kind of experience VR was built for.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Myst series or a total newcomer, I urge you to give Riven a try. It’s a bold, mystifying tone piece that still feels wholly unique decades later. That’s not nostalgia talking; that’s coming from a new convert who’s still not done wandering those islands like a wide-eyed tourist seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time.

Riven is available now on PC, and it is compatible with VR headsets.

Netflix subscribers, you’re in for several treats in July. While June may have been a little sparse with the original programing, July has Cobra Kai season 6 part 1, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, and a new season of Unsolved Mysteries. Those are just the highlights of the Netflix originals. July is also pretty jam-packed with shows from other networks or studios including the arrival of Suits season 9, all six seasons of Lost, and All American season 6.

Thankfully, Netflix didn’t skimp on the films coming to the service in July. The Back to the Future and Spider-Man trilogies are both back on Netflix alongside several other fan-favorite flicks from a wide variety of genres. It’s an impressive lineup, and yet another example of why Netflix remains the dominant streamer.

SK hynix Wraps up Dev Work on High-End PCB01 PCIe 5.0 SSD for OEMs, Launching Later This Year

SK hynix early in Friday announced that the company has finished the development of it’s PCB01 PCIe Gen5 SSD, the company’s forthcoming high-end SSD for OEMs. Based on the company’s new Alistar platform, the PCB01 is designed to deliver chart-topping performance for client machines. And, as a sign of the times, SK hynix is positioning the PCB01 for AI PCs, looking to synergize with the overall industry interest in anything and everything AI.

The bare, OEM-focused drives have previously been shown off by SK hynix, and make no attempt to hide what’s under the hood. The PCB01 relies on SK hynix’s Alistar controller, which features a PCIe Gen5 x4 host interface on the front end and eight NAND channels on the back end, placing it solidly in the realm of high-end SSDs. Paired with the Alistar controller is the company’s latest 238-layer TLC NAND (H25T1TD48C & H25T2TD88C), which offers a maximum transfer speed of 2400 MT/second. Being that this is a high-end client SSD, there’s also a DRAM chip on board, though the company isn’t disclosing its capacity.

As with other high-end PCIe 5.0 client SSDs, SK hynix is planning on hitting peak read speeds of up to 14GB/second on the drive, while peak sequential write speeds should top 12GB/second (with pSLC caching, of course) – performance figures well within the realm of possibility for an 8 channel drive. As for random performance, at Computex the company was telling attendees that the drives should be able to sustain 4K random read and write rates of 2 million IOPS, which is very high as well. The SSDs are also said to consume up to 30% less power than ‘predecessors,’ according to SK hynix, though the company didn’t elaborate on that figure. Typically in the storage industry, energy figures are based on iso-performance (rather than peak performance) – essentially measuring energy efficiency per bit rather than toal power consumption – and that is likely the case here as well.

At least initially, SK Hynix plans to release its PCB01 in three capacities – 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. The company has previously disclosed that their 238L TLC NAND has a capacity of 512Gbit, so these are typical capacity figures for single-sided drives. And while the focus of the company’s press release this week was on OEM drives, this is the same controller and NAND that is also going into the company’s previously-teased retail Platinum P51 SSD, so this week’s reveal offers a bit more detail into what to expect from that drive family as well.

Specs aside, Ahn Hyun, the Head of the N-S Committee at SK hynix, said that multiple global CPU providers for on-device AI PCs are seeking collaboration for the compatibility validation process, which is underway, so expect PCB01 drives inside PCs in this back-to-school and holiday seasons.

“We will work towards enhancing our leadership as the global top AI memory provider also in the NAND solution space by successfully completing the customer validation and mass production of PCB01, which will be in the limelight,” Ahn Hyun said.

I always remember my mother telling me to choose my friends wisely. If you befriend the wrong person who does the wrong thing at the wrong time, and you are with them, you too might get into trouble, even if it isn’t your fault. That’s life. Many a person is in prison because of just such a situation. It was always an important lesson to remember.

The lesson below is similar. It says that you need to pick your friends wisely, but for a different reason. He says that, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most amount of time with.” So, if you want to be goal-oriented and successful, hang out with people who are goal-oriented and successful. If you find yourself hanging out with a bunch of knuckleheads or class clowns or trouble-makers, you might eventually fall into those categories. Furthermore, he says that there are four types of friends:

Addition: people that will add to your life and make your life better.Subtraction: when you are with these people, you are not the best version of you.Multiplication: They make you the best version of yourself.Division: People who are always dividing and making things hard.

In conclusion, you need to pick your friends wisely. How do you do that? You select the people in your life who bring out the best version of yourself and get rid of the people who bring drama and trouble to your life. If someone makes you feel bad about yourself, they are probably not the best person for you. If someone is distracting you from the life that you want for yourself, they are probably not good for you. Begin paying attention to this and choose the friends that bring out the best version of you. End of lesson.

Expressing Gratitude To Parents

Kansas City Royals pitcher Brady Singer used part of his $4.25 signing bonus to give his parents a special Christmas gift. In an effort to thank his parents for all of they did for him, he paid off the mortgage on their house and all other debt they had. Brady also wrote a beautiful letter to his parents, thanking them for their time and money over the years. I’m sure his parents sacrificed mightily to help Brady reach his dreams. Imagine the cost for all of those travel teams, tournaments, and private lessons. Imagine the cumulative time off from work that each parent had to take.

Joe’s Perspective: 99.9% of you high school athletes will never make it to the professional level in your chosen sport. Most of you will not make millions in your professional career, especially as a signing bonus. However, all of you can write a letter to your parents to thank them for what they have done and are currently doing for you. Think of all the car rides… think of all the hours spent in a seat to watch you play… think of all the money they paid for you to play… Maybe the hotels for tournaments… Maybe the summer camps… Maybe the time they had to take off from work so you could compete in your chosen sport(s).

My assignment for all of you is to write a letter to your parents, thanking them for everything they did for you. Tell them how much you appreciate their sacrifices. Write this letter from the heart. If you have the courage, read it directly to them. My guess is they (mom, dad or whomever) will really appreciate this act of kindness. Don’t overestimate the power of saying thank you or of receiving a thank you.

A Special Kind of Signing Day

In almost every high school across the country, athletes sign their national letter of intent to celebrate a scholarship with a particular school. It’s usually a big deal. Schools set up a table with the college colors. Athletes wear a shirt or hat to indicate where he/she will attend college. Family and friends attend the event to support the athlete. For big-time athletes, members of the media cover the press conference. The athlete then signs the letter to make it official.

However, at Henrico County Schools in Virginia, they hold a different kind of signing day. Students who have elected not to go to college, and instead have accepted vocational and tech jobs, are celebrated. Just like the athletes, these students wear the hats of the business they will soon be working for. Family and friends applaud this decision. The business gets recognition and the athletes smile as they sign their employment contract.

Joe’s Perspective: These athletes deserve a special celebration of their accomplishments. Good for them. They undoubtedly worked hard for a long time to receive this scholarship. The same can be said for these students who have chosen a path in the trades. They will become electricians, plumbers, welders… These students will make good money in these professions and they will begin making that money right away. It is a solid life decision. Good for them. And, in my opinion, they deserve just as much recognition for their accomplishments.
